 ANNUAL CALL FOR RESEARCH PROPOSALS

Applications after this date and uncompleted applications will not be considered.

The intention of ARSEP Foundation is to encourage and support only the highest quality of research and training in areas related to Multiple Sclerosis.
No topic restrictions are imposed, other than the required demonstration of relevance to multiple sclerosis. ARSEP Foundation welcomes any basic and clinical research applications focused on multiple sclerosis, including:
  • Immunologic basis of multiple sclerosis,
  • Myelin biology and neurobiology, with a focus on basic and applied knowledge that will lead to control of myelin breakdown and axonal degeneration, restoration of myelin and axonal integrity and neurophysiological and functional recovery,
  • Susceptibility to MS, including genetic, gender-related, and environnemental factors,
  • Virology, infectious disease processes that may trigger disease activity,• Measures of disease activity, including imaging technology and the identification and use of biomarkers,
  • Clinical research, epidemiology and therapeutics,
  • And so on

RESEARCH GRANTS:

  • Research projects taking place outside of France can be funded by Arsep Foundation provided they are integrated into a multicenter project incorporating at least one French team,
  • A principal investigator (PI) can only submit one project as coordinator. So:
                     ♦ If a PI has obtained a grant for 2 years (for instance in 2011) he or she will not be allowed to submit another grant before completion of the first one (for instance in 2013);
                     ♦ If a PI had obtained a grant for a project he or she cannot propose a candidate for a fellowship for a different project,
  • Participation in a project must be signed by all collaborators involved in the research proposed.
FELLOWSHIPS:
  • Arsep Foundation support covers salary (33 000 € for a doctoral fellowship; 55 000 € for a post-doctoral fellowship)
  • The support cannot exceed 3 years;
  • The candidate should be less than 40 years old;
  • French nationality is not required.
  • Part of the doctoral or post-doctoral formation should have been or will be done in France;
  • A principal investigator (PI) can only submit one project EITHER as a grant application (with or without an associated fellowship application) OR as a fellowship application (not associated with a grant application).
PhD students can apply to a fellowship only during the last year of their thesis and only if
  •  Information is provided regarding previous funding;
  •  A 4th year is necessary for the completion of the PhD work and is authorized by the University.
Postdoctoral fellows:
  • if the applicants reside in France, funding can be granted for the first year and possibly renewed;
  • if the applicants acquire training in another country than France, funding can be given only for the first year.
→ FOR MEMORY:
In respect with the French law, the duration of fixed-term post-doctoral contracts (CDD) in French public laboratories cannot exceed 6 consecutive years.


HOW TO APPLY?

ARSEP proposes 3 types of research supports:
  • "Application for fellowship" to fund a doctoral or post-doctoral candidate. This application concerns only the salary for a young researcher,
  • "Application for research grant" to only fund a project (laboratory expenses, equipment),
  • "Application for research grant + associated fellowship" to fund a project (laboratory expenses, equipment) AND the salary of a doctoral or post-doctoral researcher working on the described project. The fellowship’s candidate has to be named.

Each application is divided in 2 files:
  • An administrative file. Please, send this file in “word” format. Information provided in this file (summaries in French/English for a lay audience) will be used by Arsep Foundation for its own communication needs.
  • A project file. This file could be sent in “PDF” or “word” format.

A completed application should have these 2 files.

NOTE:
The electronic submission is the date that counts for the deadline. The document sent by post must be signed by all the Principal Investigator(s) of the project.


TRAVEL GRANTS, national & international (up to 6 months)

There are no deadlines:

The scientific committee of Fondation ARSEP will inform the applicant of the outcome of their application within 2 months of submission.

The purpose of the awards is to facilitate exchanges between clinical centres and/or laboratories involved in Multiple Sclerosis. Travel may be within, to, or from France.


It is primarily aimed at clinicians or researchers wishing to undertake a period of training in an area relating to Multiple Sclerosis at a different location from their current institution.
The training period can be up to 6 months.
Funding requests for up to 5.000 € to cover travel and accommodation are permitted.

The application form (3 pages maximum), written in English, should contain the following information:

  • the rationale and scientific aims of the training that will be received;
  • the funding requested;
  • the length of the training course;
  • 10 references (maximum)
  • a summary in French for a lay audience
  • a summary in English for a lay audience
  • a curriculum vitae of the candidate
  • letters of recommendation from supervisors at both the current and host institutions.
